The Best Free Portrait Session Locations in Tacoma & the South Sound
By Northern Traveler Photography
If you're looking for a stunning backdrop for your portrait session without spending a dime on venue fees, you're in luck , Tacoma and the South Sound are quietly one of the most photogenic regions in all of Washington. From sweeping waterfront views and old-growth forests to golden-hour meadows and historic architecture, this area has something for every style and season.
Here are my favorite free locations for portrait sessions in the South Sound.
Point Defiance Park , Tacoma
Point Defiance is the crown jewel of Tacoma portrait locations, and honestly one of the most underrated parks in the entire Pacific Northwest. Spanning over 700 acres, it offers an incredible variety of backdrops all in one place , towering old-growth firs, manicured rose gardens, rocky shoreline, and misty forest trails.
For portraits, I love the wooded trails in the Five Mile Drive area for that moody, lush PNW forest feel. In summer, the gardens burst with color and make for beautiful, airy sessions. The beach along the waterfront gives you Puget Sound views with the Olympic Mountains in the distance , especially magical at golden hour.
Best for: All portrait styles , forest, romantic, family, senior
Best time of year: Spring for blooms, fall for golden foliage
Pro tip: Arrive early on weekends , this park gets busy fast.
Fort Steilacoom Park , Lakewood
Fort Steilacoom is one of those locations that makes clients say "wait, this is free?!" The park has everything: wide open grassy fields that glow at golden hour, gorgeous mature trees that create that magical dappled light, a pretty lake with a small beach, and even red historic barns that add a rustic charm unlike anything else in the area.
This is my go-to recommendation for senior portraits, family sessions, and couples who want a relaxed, lifestyle feel. The variety of settings means we can get a dozen different looks in a single two-hour session.
Best for: Seniors, families, couples, lifestyle portraits
Best time of year: Late spring through fall
Pro tip: The barns are on the east side of the park , plan your golden hour shots there for the best warm light.
Scatter Creek Wildlife Area , Rochester
A bit of a drive from Tacoma (about 45 minutes south near Olympia), but absolutely worth it if you're after that iconic tall-grass, wide-open-sky look. Scatter Creek is a sprawling wildlife area with golden fields of grass, wildflowers, and ancient oak trees that feel like something out of a storybook.
Sunset here is unreal. The fields catch the light in a way that turns everything amber and warm , it's one of those locations where you almost can't take a bad photo. I bring clients here especially for summer and fall senior sessions when the grass is tall and the skies are dramatic.
Best for: Senior portraits, creative/editorial, couples
Best time of year: Late summer and fall
Pro tip: The site has multiple entrances , the south entrance offers the best mix of open fields and oak trees.
Titlow Park , Tacoma
Tucked along the Narrows waterway in west Tacoma, Titlow Park is a hidden gem that offers a beautiful mix of pebble beach, saltwater marsh, and forested trails. The views across the Narrows to the Kitsap Peninsula are stunning, and when the tide is low the reflective tidal flats create gorgeous natural leading lines.
It's less crowded than Point Defiance, which means more creative freedom during your session. The old pier structure adds an interesting architectural element, and the surrounding trees offer great shade for midday sessions.
Best for: Couples, seniors, creative/editorial
Best time of year: Year-round; especially beautiful in fall and winter fog
Pro tip: Low tide creates the best foreground interest , check the tide chart before you book.
Tumwater Falls Park , Tumwater
About 30 minutes south of Tacoma, Tumwater Falls Park is one of the most naturally dramatic free locations in the South Sound. A series of cascading waterfalls tumble through lush green gorge , the kind of backdrop that makes portraits look like they were taken in a fairy tale.
The vibrant green moss and ferns are beautiful year-round, but peak in late spring and early fall when the foliage is richest. The waterfalls are louder and more dramatic in winter and early spring after rains.
Best for: Creative portraits, couples, families who love nature
Best time of year: Spring and early fall
Pro tip: Wear shoes you don't mind getting a little muddy , the best angles are off the main path.
A Note on Permits
For personal portrait sessions at city and county parks, you generally don't need a permit. However, if you're shooting at a Washington State Park, commercial photographers are required to obtain a photography permit. Most of the locations listed above are city, county, or wildlife area land, so you're good to go , but it's always worth double-checking with the managing agency before your session.
